Within living memory a revolution has occurred in the green and gentle countryside of Prince Edward Island. Over the past few decades the changes have been so profound that the recent past is now referred to by many as "them times." Based on the popular local CBC Radio series of the same name, Them Times is a collection of historical vignettes depicting Prince Edward Island before and after what some folklorists call "the break," that early post-World War II period when the twentieth century seemed to hit the Island all at once. David Weale combines anecdotal reminiscences of Islanders with some of his own musings and observations of a way of life that has all but disappeared.
I know I never thought about a tenth of these issues. The author argued that had they not arrived when they did, the few remaining inhabitants of Jamestown would have either perished due to illness, starvation, or native attack or fled, possibly burning the settlement to the ground, something that would have been devastating to the arrival of Thomas West, Lord De La Warre who arrived after the _Sea Venture_ people did with many settlers and still more supplies. Please, dear reader, you have so much more intelligence and intuition of your own to continue to swallow this, or be swallowed by this fantasy created, albeit with good intent in the beginning, by a mind fairly well deluded by this time.
